HSMP Application
How do I apply for the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme?

You should only apply under the HSMP if you are outside the United Kingdom. If you are already in the United Kingdom you should apply under the new points-based system Tier 1 (General). If you are in the United Kingdom and make an initial application to the HSMP now, it will be rejected, even if you intend to return to your home country and continue the application process from there.

Initial applications to the HSMP involve a two stage process. The first stage of the application is to pass the points-based and English language assessments; this is called the HSMP application. The second stage is to apply for permission to enter the United Kingdom as a highly skilled migrant.

If you are granted entry clearance as a highly skilled migrant you will be able to live and work in the United Kingdom for a maximum period of 24 months. When the end of this period approaches you will need to apply to extend your stay under the new points-based system Tier 1 (General).

HSMP application

The first stage of the application process will make sure you have the skills and experience necessary to be recognised as a highly skilled migrant. You should apply using application form HSMP1.

It is important you complete the application form (download on this page) correctly and provide all the supporting documents.

If your HSMP application is successful you will be sent an HSMP approval letter and you can move on to the second stage of the process. The second stage of the process will be different depending on whether you are overseas or already in the United Kingdom.

Entry clearance application - currently outside the United Kingdom

If you are currently overseas you will need to make an application for entry clearance before you can travel to the United Kingdom. You must make this application within six months of receiving your HSMP approval letter.
